WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

For more than 60 years, The Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin has protected more than 236,000 acres of Wisconsin’s forests, waters, wetlands and prairies. Today, we actively own and manage over 30,000 acres in Wisconsin, including about 10,000 acres in the Baraboo Hills. The Baraboo Hills of Sauk and Columbia counties are all that remain of one of the most ancient rock outcrops in North America. A forested sanctuary underlain by durable rock called Baraboo quartzite, the Hills are an ecologically unique part of the Midwest. The oak, maple, and basswood forests of the Baraboo Hills constitute the largest block of upland forest still standing in southern Wisconsin. TNC manages land in 10 preserves on the Baraboo Hills and collaborates with multiple partner organizations in Sauk County to achieve common conservation goals.

The Baraboo Hills Stewardship Assistant is part of a team that performs and participates in preserve operations, stewardship, maintenance, and land management on TNC preserves and partner lands in Sauk County, Wisconsin. This is a six-month (June-November), full-time, short-term position based out of Baraboo, Wisconsin. Job duties include working to conduct invasive species mapping and management, monitor lands owned by TNC or under conservation easement, maintain preserve areas and trails frequented by the public, conduct timber management, coordinate and oversee volunteers, and interact with preserve neighbors and visitors. This position will work under the direction and supervision of the Baraboo Hills Land Steward and may work under variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult or hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
