JOB SUMMARY

The Heritage Planning Unit is responsible for all processes under the Ontario Heritage Act including designations, listings, applications and permits issued under the Act. The Unit also provides advice on Planning Act applications related to cultural heritage resources and develops heritage planning policy including Heritage Conservation District Plans under the Ontario Heritage Act, and broader policy related to built heritage in the City’s Official Plan and other planning documents.

The Heritage Register is a list of all properties in the City that are protected under the Ontario Heritage Act, including properties that have been formally designated and properties that have been listed as having cultural heritage value.

You maintain the City’s Heritage Register, process requests related to non-designated properties, undertake historic research, and prepare related reports. You also design and deliver assigned heritage inventory projects, support Unit communications and participate on assigned projects.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

4-year degree in History, Urban Planning, Heritage Conservation, Architectural History, Geography or other related field

3 years of experience in historical or archival research, heritage conservation or urban planning
KNOWLEDGE
  • Heritage conservation best practices and methodologies
  • The Ontario Heritage Act and Ontario Heritage Toolkit
  • Historical or archival research best practices, methods and sources
  • Project management techniques
  • Familiarity with municipal legislative/approval processes
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Analytical skills
  • Oral and written communications skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to use a computer and MS Office applications
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
