Duties
- Use instructions from packages to prepare nourishments, special beverages, or other foods required by regular or therapeutic/modified diets.
- Cook or re-thermalize a variety of simple hot foods that require grilling, deep fat frying, broiling, and use of the oven or microwave cooking.
- Inventory ward refrigerators to replace expired or overstocked nourishments.
- Provide patients with basic information about modified diets and forward complex nutritional questions to diet technician and/or registered dietitian.
- Prepare a variety of cold foods such as sandwiches, salads, desserts, and beverages.
- Apply special sanitary techniques in preparing formulas and tube feeding such as sterilizing equipment and sanitizing work areas.
- Deliver nourishments to the wards at established times.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).
- This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
Qualifications
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Food Service Worker without more than normal supervision. Ability to interpret basic instructions to assemble patient food trays. Ability to precisely measure, weigh, and blend correct amounts of ingredients required from recipes. Skill in conducting basic food preparation to include grilling, frying, and microwaving. Ability to operate a Point of Sale cash register system and give correct change. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

- Physical Effort: Work is performed on hard surfaces and in areas that require employee to stand, stoop, and bend. Frequently moves trays of completed salads, desserts, and/or moving trays of bulk nourishment. Performs work involving light to moderate physical effort. Lifts objects up to 30 pounds. Regularly pushes food carts weighing 45 pounds. Required to work on patient wards to deliver and retrieve menus and patient meal trays.
- Working Conditions: Work is performed predominantly in a noisy kitchen, and sometimes in dining area. The work involves continuous walking and standing on tile floors. The incumbent is exposed to minor cuts, bruises, burns and scalds. Incumbent works on rotating day, evening, weekend and holiday shifts.
