Duties
- Works under general supervision of the supervisor or lead who assigns projects to be accomplished.
- Performs seasonal gardening tasks involved with preparing planting areas, laying sod, watering, planting, transplanting, pruning and trimming plants, shrubs and trees.
- Skill in applying fertilizers evenly and placing seeds and plants at proper depths.
- Skill in operating hand and power tools and equipment (seeders, spreaders, edger, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, and sprayers).
- Maintains flowers and seeded areas to ensure attractive appearance. Applies fertilizers and chemicals. Reports atypical plants to supervisor.
- This position requires the incumbent to perform non-supervisory work requiring a knowledge of gardening procedures and skill in growing and tending lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees.

- Incumbent may also be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally-controlled facilities.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and the pushing of carts and wheelbarrows. Climbing is required to prune or trim vegetation.
- Lifts and carries heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer, grass seed, etc. weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work is done outside, possibly in rain or in uncomfortably hot and humid conditions. Exposed to cuts and bruises from falls or from carrying materials and supplies.
- Exposed to dirt, dust, mud, and sometimes to chemical sprays and dust. Required wearing protective clothing such as gloves and safety glasses.
- Selected applicant must be able to pass a Medical Physical Examination.
Qualifications
1. Must have demonstrated knowledge of seasonal gardening tasks, such as fertilizing, preparing seedbeds, transplanting, laying sod, aerating, pruning, trimming, and applying chemicals to plants.
2. Must be able to work under general supervision, responding to initial oral and written instructions and completing assigned tasks.

- This is a federal wage schedule (FWS) position.
- All FWS employees are entitled to overtime work for work in excess of 8 hours in a day or in excess of 40 hours in the administrative workweek, whichever provides the greater benefit to the employee.
- Regular full-time, regular part-time (to include those in a limited tenure appointment category) and regularly scheduled flexible employees are entitled to Sunday premium pay when working Sunday shifts. A FWS employee will be paid a night shift differential of 7.5% for the entire shift when a majority of the employee's regularly scheduled non-overtime hours of work occur between the hours of 1500 and 2400. A FWS employee will be paid a night shift differential of 10% of the scheduled rate if a majority of the employee's regularly scheduled non-overtime hours of work occur between the hours of 2300-0800.
