About the Auckland System Management (ASM) Alliance
The ASM is an alliance between HEB Construction, Fulton Hogan and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to operate and maintain Auckland's motorway network. The Alliance is expected to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders as well as suppliers to deliver exceptional outcomes for customers using the Auckland transport system. Estimated project dates are from July 2019 to June 2028.
The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to work on a large-scale road maintenance contract. We are looking for General Worker to join our team at ASM. As General Worker, you will ensure to deliver professional incident response services within the ASM to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the Auckland Network State highways and motorways. This role manages minor incidents and supports emergency services in serious incidents. Collaboration with the Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC) and emergency services is imperative for the success of this role.
What you will be doing:
As General Worker, you will have a variety of responsibilities including:

Work with wider ASM (Auckland System Management) incident response teams and Incident Response Manager (IRM) to fully understand the changes to the Traffic management industry in New Zealand and what this will look like for the dynamic activity of incident response services. Generally, this includes response to:
- Debris on road.
- Customer breakdown assistance (on road remedy of stopped vehicles).
- Road crashes.
- Animal on carriageway.
- Asset damage (including traffic assets or vegetation etc).
- Flooding events.
- Storm events including high wind.
- Protest events.
- Any other assistance to Emergency Services or Partner Agencies as required.
- Attend incidents from levels 1 - 5 as directed by ASM.
- Operate under the Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS Structure) to deliver appropriate response to a range of incidents. (This implies a clear Command/Control structure)

Follow direction from the Team Leader and support the Traffic Incident Responders (TIR) at sites including traffic incidents, vehicle crashes, material spills, asset damage and natural hazards.
- Manage incident sites in partnership with ATOC for minor roading incidents.
- Support emergency services in serious incidents.
- Assist in the identification, triage, and analysis of a wide range of incident types, following established incident response protocols and escalating issues as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the wider incident response team to gather and document incident details, including relevant logs, evidence, and supporting information.
- Contribute to incident response decision-making by providing accurate and timely information to aid in incident containment, eradication, and recovery efforts.
- Assist in the implementation of incident response plans, playbooks, and checklists to ensure consistent and efficient incident handling.
- Be proactive in your approach identifying possible areas of improvement and innovation.
- Ensure all incidents are reported and recorded appropriately.
- Undertake physical works as required to restore lanes including cleaning up debris, minor breakdown assistance, maintenance activities, manual handling.
- Undertake maintenance activities as appropriate to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the transport system.
- Proactively participate in incident response training, exercises, and tabletop simulations to enhance skills and familiarity with incident response procedures.
- Emergency Traffic Management Certified or expected to obtain, along with other related training associated with the ASM and Incident Response.
- Contribute to a collaborative and productive work environment.
- Be adaptive to Industry changes and become Leaders of change.
Shift work
The role requires the Team to undertake shift work as set out below (including public holidays). Each Team member will have to rotate through each shift pattern on a weekly basis and work a minimum of 40 hours per week:
Monday to Friday:
- 04:30 - 13:00 Morning shift
- 12:30 - 21:00 Afternoon shift
- 20:30 - 05:00 Night shift
Saturdays are seated with the ASM Corridor business.
Sunday by roster with 1 month lead time.
About You:
Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, experience, and skills:
- Physically Fit, able to manipulate work equipment, TTM devices and gear.
- STMS Level A, B, C non-practicing (desirable)
- Class 1 full driver's licence (desirable)
- Class 2 full driver's licence (desirable)
- Current first aid certificate (desirable)
- First aid trained (desirable)
- Basic vehicular mechanical knowledge (desirable)
- Appreciation of interpersonal communication (desirable)
- Previous experience working in the high-capacity motorway corridor or roadway (desirable)
- Customer Driven - Clearly understands the internal and external customer and is dedicated to meeting their expectations and requirements.
- Accountability - Faces up to problem situations quickly and directly and doesn't hold back when action needs to be taken.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced and rapidly changing incident response programme.
- Contribute to an open forum about Health and Safety
