Librarian
Salary: Starting Salary £24000 (FTE) plus benefits including: Local Government Pension, Health Care Cash Plan, Generous Staff Discount scheme, 3 extra inset days for planning, at least one personal leave per year.

We are seeking to appoint a highly skilled and experienced colleague to join our successful and friendly school. We are very proud of our community at Marsden Heights Community College. We are an 11-16 United Learning Academy with a roll of 1050. The College is currently oversubscribed in every year group and we hold appeals panels every month.

At Marsden Heights we desire to support our pupils to grow into confident, creative and resilient adults who have a lifelong love of learning. We seek to ensure that our pupils are effective communicators, active participants and independent learners who can take their next steps into an increasingly uncertain world with secure knowledge from the range of subjects we offer.

All pupils should be:
  • ambitious– to achieve the best
  • confident – to have the courage of their convictions and to take risks in the right cause
  • creative – to imagine possibilities and make them real
  • respectful –in all that they do
  • enthusiastic – to seek opportunity, find what is good and pursue their talents and interests
  • determined – to overcome obstacles and reach success

In order to support our pupils in their academic and personal development, we believe it is essential they experience a wide range of opportunities. Our commitment to ‘Education with character’ provides wider opportunities for our pupils to access a well-rounded curriculum that extends learning beyond the classroom.

Why is this role important to us?

At Marsden Heights, we are passionate about reading and the powerful role that the library and librarian have in improving the life chances of our pupils. Our aim is for every student to leave the school with a reading age either at, or above their chronological age. We are looking for a motivated and ambitious librarian who will be committed to improving reading across the school. We are very proud of our newly redesigned library which is open-plan and sits at the heart of the College.

What is a day in the library like at MHCC?

A day in MHCC library is busy from start to finish:

  • From 8.00am children arrive at breakfast club and will visit the library to read books or magazines, change their library books or do homework on the computers.
  • During morning check-in time, there may be an assembly to visit if there is an event going on, or competitions running in progress groups.
  • During lessons 1 and 2, English classes may be visiting the library where you will check individual pupil reading progress and read with selected pupils.
  • Breaktime is a hive of activity for the library, when our pupils will need advice in selecting books whilst student librarians check books in and out. You will most probably be asked to be a lucky listener at this time!
  • After break, there may be some intervention students to work with or you may be preparing resources for a visiting author or a calendared reading event.
  • Lunchtime is an opportunity for pupils to read or study, or there may be a whole school reading challenge or activities taking place.
  • After your lunch, during afternoon lessons, there will be some time for administrative duties or you may have a small group intervention.
  • After school, you may be holding a book club, a homework club or other enrichment activity.

We have high expectations and we make no apologies for being very demanding of our pupils and our staff, as only the best will do for our children.

Hard work, trust and fairness are important to us, as is being prepared to learn and take on new challenges. We know that no one is the ‘finished article’ and we strive to do our best for our pupils every day. We are a welcoming school and if you join us, you will experience our ‘no blame’ culture, where everyone works together for the good of the pupils.

As a United Learning academy whose motto is ‘The Best in Everyone’ you will be someone who wants the very best for all young people, irrespective of their background. We are earnest in our commitment to safeguarding our young people.

If you feel you would like to apply, please submit a completed application form.

I look forward very much to welcoming you to our school – we are extremely proud of its journey so far and our pupils are described by everyone who visits as delightful, kind, caring and their behaviour in classroom is superb. Don’t just take our word for it – come and see us!

With kind regards
