WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Northeast MN Fuels Planner (Planner) is based in the Kawishiwi Ranger District office in Ely, Minnesota, the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Planner is an out the door resource management professional responsible for:

  • Collaborating closely with USFS staff, other agency partners, and non-profit allies to build a portfolio of private landowner and cross-boundary fuels management action plans.
  • Participating in prescribed fire operations as qualified and assigned. You may also be available for wildfire details during periods agreed upon with their supervisor.
  • Working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU


The Planner serves as a member of a multi-agency, interdisciplinary team that develops and implements fuels management plans in and around the Superior National Forest. Implementation of these plans will result in reduced wildfire hazard and improved forest resilience on a landscape scale.

We are looking for someone to start April 8, 2024. The position may be scheduled for less than year-round work as agreed upon by the Planner and their supervisor.


WHAT YOU'LL BRING


  • Bachelors degree and 3 years experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing staff or volunteers.
  • Experience working closely with a variety of partners, i.e., government officials, public stakeholders, non-profit partners, etc.
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 3-5 years experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.
  • Familiarity with principles of wildland fire management and forestry.
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.

SALARY INFORMATION


The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $52,000 - $58,000 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidates actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
