About the Organization
This position will be supporting a growing host-pathogen lab. The lab works on multiple projects that involve making and using humanized mice in infectious disease (HIV/TB) and cancer. The ultimate aim of the lab is to investigate disease pathogenesis in these models and use these findings to generate novel therapeutics to help prevent or treat the disease. The lab is based in the Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building in Carleton Campus of Dalhousie University.

Job Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Professor, the Research Assistant is responsible for providing research support to the faculty member in their research activities. This support includes performing standardized and non-standardized laboratory experiments, analyzing data, ensuring proper biosafety protocols are followed, training new lab members and ensuring the lab is functioning well by supporting ordering/machine maintenance. With support from the supervisor they will develop capacity with increased responsibility for performing a range of laboratory assignments under general direction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform experiments including in vitro and in vivo (mice) experiments, following, writing and adapting SOPs, maintaining detailed records of results, using software to analyze data, work independently and as part of the lab team.
  • Assist with training others on techniques and lab equipment, helping trainees with projects and signing of trainees on SOPs.
  • Create a culture of safety in the CL3 facility and the lab working with Level 2, 2+ and 3 pathogens and maintaining training and stock records.
  • Keeping the lab clean and safe, maintaining equipment, ordering, scheduling use, preparing reagents, disposing of waste, keeping inventory, shipping/receiving.
  • Coordinating with other labs/groups to include timely responses to emails and follow up.

Note
Occasional work on evenings and weekend.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Science (Immunology/Microbiology preferred or a related discipline) with minimum 2 years of work experience (MSc will be considered as work experience).
  • High attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team.

Assets
  • Related work experience.
  • Experience with animal work, immunology techniques (flow cytometry).
  • Prior work with CL2, CL2+ and CL3 pathogens.
  • Knowledge in immunology/virology/basic science.
  • Experience mentoring students.
