Background

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.

Role Summary

A 3 year Bone Cancer Research Trist/GOSH funded Research Fellow post, starting October, is available within the lab of Prof. Clare Davies and Dr. Susanne Gatz investigating synthetic lethal genetic events with PRMT5 inhibitors in Ewing sarcoma, focusing on the DNA damage response and splicing.

We require a highly motivated and organised individual that is willing to meet deadlines. Principal methodologies include cell culture, analysis of DNA damage and repair by microscopy and RNA-sequencing for splicing analysis.

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism and a PhD (or near to completion) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • Practical experience of:
    • Mammalian cell culture, including single molecule DNA fiber analysis
    • Microscopy-based laboratory techniques (including immunofluorescence)
    • Western blotting and immunoprecipitation
    • Analysis of big datasets (e.g. RNA-sequencing)
  • The ability to work and think independently and to significantly contribute to the planning of a programme of scientific research
  • Effective organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • Evidence of an ability to work individually and in a research team
  • The ability and willingness to keep up with and have a working knowledge of the scientific literature in the field of the project
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Willingness to work flexibly and out-of-hours when necessary, to fulfil the needs of the research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
