Job Description

summary of position

The field service technician is responsible for the on-site service and startup of commercial and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration units and equipment and provides technical support via phone or email to assist customers in troubleshooting equipment in the field.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Troubleshoot by observing equipment in operation and testing system operation and by using precision gauges and testing instruments.
  • Troubleshoot via phone or email using the information provided by customers and schematics, testing documentation, submittal data, and other information available on RAE computer systems.
  • Provide warranty data and guidelines to customers.
  • Follow Service Department procedures on handling warranty and non-warranty troubleshooting and parts issues.
  • Follow Service Department procedures for logging all applicable data for service issues in the field and departmental data logging requirements.
  • Provide positive, accurate, and timely information to customers regarding field issues.
  • Test lines, components, and connections for leaks.
  • Dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.
  • Adjust or replace worn or defective mechanisms and parts, and reassemble repaired systems.
  • Read blueprints to determine the location, size, capacity, and type of components needed to build a refrigeration system.
  • Install wiring to connect components to an electric power source.
  • Perform mechanical overhauls and refrigerant reclaiming.
  • Cut, bend, thread, and connect pipe to functional components and water, power, or refrigeration system.
  • Adjust valves according to specifications and charge system with the proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into the system.
  • Estimate, order, pick up, deliver, and install materials and supplies needed to maintain equipment in good working condition.
  • Install expansion and control valves using acetylene torches and wrenches.
  • Mount compressor, condenser, and other components in specified locations on frames, using hand tools and acetylene welding equipment.
  • Keep records of repairs and replacements made and causes of malfunctions.
  • Layout reference points for the installation of structural and functional components using measuring instruments.
  • Fabricate and assemble structural and functional components of the refrigeration system using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.
  • Lift and align components into position, using hoist or block and tackle.
  • Drill holes and install mounting brackets and hangers into the floor and walls of the building.
  • Insulate shells and cabinets of systems.
  • Travel to the job site and identify concerns by surveying conditions and making recommendations for action.
  • Resolve product or service problems by clarifying the customer's complaints, determining the root cause, selecting and explaining the best solution, and correcting the problem.
  • Startup units and equipment by going through equipment specified on startup paperwork, checking for any shipping or installation problems, tightening on all required screws, valve packing nuts, and bolts. Install service gauges, check power, and control operation. Engage power to equipment, engage control and check the operation of equipment.
  • Communicate with customers, contractors, engineering, and service to resolve field issues. Provide Service & Start-Up information by asking and answering questions critical to equipment performance.
  • Attend work as outlined in Employee Handbook and/or specified by your supervisor.
  • Complete other tasks as directed by supervisor.
  • Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and company procedures.

Desired qualifications

Education: Associate's Degree (two-year college or technical school) or equivalent job experience.

Experience: Minimum three years experience.

Skills: Ability to use Microsoft product software. Self-motivated. Effective oral and written communication skills. Multi-tasking abilities. Must have basic computer skills--ability to read a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch.

Certificates, Licenses, or training: Valid driver's license, EPA Certification preferred.

Interaction with others

Reports to Service Supervisor. Must be able to accurately receive and understand supervisors' instructions to determine if further instruction is required before attempting to complete the task assigned in constant communication with other departments (Service, production, etc.) and external customers. It is essential that the employee can work with all RAE team employees and show a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization.

working environment

The job is conducted primarily in a test lab in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. Service technician also performs work on-site at various locations for equipment startup and service. The setting may vary considerably, including outdoors and indoors, hot and cold climates, and an array of locations.
