Duties

Vegetation Management Student Technician

As part of the Vegetation Management team, students will:
  • Actively managing non-native vegetation using a variety of integrated techniques, including prevention methods, manual control, and herbicide application.
  • Support population monitoring and habitat restoration of 5-needle pines (whitebark pine and limber pine)
  • Support restoration and reclamation activities related to invasive vegetation management, wildfire protection, and wildlife habitat improvement.
  • Conduct vegetation fieldwork in front country and back country locations. Fieldwork involves hiking long distances on and off trail, over varied or strenuous terrain, at times in remote locations or overnight.
  • Provide support for additional projects within the fire and vegetation program. Students also will have the opportunity to participate in other Resource Conservation activities.

Ecological Integrity (EI) Monitoring Student Technician

  • Conducting field work for core EI monitoring projects including: multi-species mammal occupancy using remote cameras, terrestrial bird diversity using audio recorders, pika relative abundance surveys, and amphibian occupancy surveys.
  • Fieldwork involves travelling or working in wilderness areas, including hiking long distances with a heavy backpack, in steep terrain, inclement weather conditions, and on day and overnight trips. Some front country field work involves working close to major highways.
  • Support additional EI Monitoring projects at the office with fieldwork preparation and planning, crossing structure monitoring, organizing and servicing field equipment, data entry and management, and remote camera photo classification

Work environment

The Resource Conservation department is searching for students to join our Fire & Vegetation and Ecological Integrity Monitoring programs for the 2025 Summer season! Students will support a wide range of projects that aim to maintain and improve ecological integrity in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay national parks.

Work for these positions will be conducted throughout the Lake Louise, Yoho, and Kootenay Field Unit. Reporting location will vary based on position.

Intent of the process

The results of this process will be used to fill student positions for the Summer of 2025 in the Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit. The results of this process may be used in the future to fill vacancies that may arise at the Student group/level in the Lake Louise, Yoho & Kootenay Field Unit or other areas within the Parks Canada Agency, with full or part-time hours.

Positions will be:
  • full‑time during the Summer 2025, with a possibility of part-time employment extending into the Fall for continuing students.
  • In the case of co-operative programs and internships, the sponsoring academic institution determines the hours of work and duration of the assignment.
  • Students graduating Spring 2025 are only eligible to be employed for a maximum of four months immediately following the completion of their final academic term.

ASSET QUALIFICATION
The asset qualifications are not essential to the job, but may be an asset in carrying out the duties of the position. They may be used in screening, assessment or determining right fit for this selection process.

ASSET EXPERIENCE
  • Experience in species level identification of vegetation (native and non-native) or regional wildlife
  • Experience in ecological restoration or reclamation activities and techniques
  • Experience using computer applications such as database management software, spreadsheets, R, or geographic information systems (GIS).
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Willingness to wear identifier clothing and personal safety equipment
  • Willingness to work irregular hours when required
  • Willingness to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation
  • Will be required to undergo, pass, and maintain Standard First Aid or higher and CPR certification
