Job Summary

DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL: Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (Buckingham Campus)

JOB TITLE: Student Support Assistant

SALARY & HOURS: £27,650 Full Time (35 hrs) fixed term to June 2025

The University of Buckingham has a unique atmosphere, unlike that of any other higher educational institution. Despite being the UK’s smallest university and the only independent university to hold a Royal Charter, Buckingham has staff from over 60 countries, making it a truly distinctive work environment. Whichever of our locations you find yourself working in, you will be sure to feel a part of our friendly community. Our size enables us to foster a very personalised, supportive, inclusive and collaborative environment, with lots of opportunity for development, something which we are very proud of.

This role will be part of the Student Support Domain within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The FMHS Student Support team provide support and administration for any factors that may impact a student’s ability to study and succeed on the course. This includes pastoral support, academic support, professionalism support and faculty processes relating to health and wellbeing, mitigating circumstances, personal tutors, reasonable adjustments and professional body registration. The Faculty is split over two campuses, based at Buckingham and at Crewe and comprises of the School of Undergraduate Medicine, School of Health Sciences and School of Postgraduate Medicine. The role will be based physically at the Buckingham campus but there will be (remote) interactions with staff and students across both sites and there may be occasional visits to Crewe and/or placement provider sites.

Role Purpose

The overall aim of the Student Support Assistant role is to support cohorts/groups of students through transition periods and to identify and support individual students with specific areas of difficulty, helping them to manage their personal situations, develop their academic skills, access appropriate support and ultimately continue and succeed with their studies. The role will be a mix between working with individual students (either face to face or online) to discuss and support their individual situations and carrying out administrative tasks related to team processes and systems such as engagement monitoring, disability support and mitigating circumstances. This post is a fixed term post to cover a staff secondment.

Skills & Experience

Specific requirements of the role holder can be found in the job description document.

We know that sometimes people can be put off applying for a job if they think they can’t tick every box, but we are invested in our people and their development, so we encourage you to apply if you believe you have the majority of the skills and experience required and are keen to develop further!
