With more than 5,000 employees, ScotRail plays a vital role in serving the people and communities of Scotland. We recognise a modern and diverse workforce, encouraged to use their talents, and develop their skills, is integral to our success in serving and reflecting the communities of Scotland. We are committed to being a diverse and inclusive employer and have also set ourselves ambitious sustainability targets including having a carbon-free railway in Scotland by 2035.
ScotRail is four times accredited as a Top Employer, has achieved Leaders in Diversity and is a Disability Confident Employer. We value, celebrate, and respect the diversity our people and aim to inspire, attract, retain, and develop the best talent. Because we value diversity and the benefits it brings, we want to continue improving the diversity of our people and particularly welcome applications from women, young people, LGBT+ people, people with a disability, and people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
For many passengers you'll be the face of ScotRail that they will remember. So creating a first-class impression, and making them feel safe, secure and welcome, should come as second nature to you. You need an eye for detail when checking and issuing tickets, an organised mind when handling cash and processing card transactions and a level head when patrolling the train and dealing with overcrowding, travel, customer issues and other situations that might unexpectedly arise.
This role will involve assisting passengers with disabilities to board and alight trains and could involve the use of a portable ramp which weighs up to 15kg, the portable ramp may be required to be carried the full length of a train.
We can't stress enough how important it is that you are a "people person" who can manage all kinds of situations constructively. This role is about delivering quality customer service and thinking clearly on your feet. Act with integrity at, all times, to provide helpful solutions to passengers and staff.
We are looking for candidates who have cash handling and customer facing experience.
The post involves working a 35-hour week. Various shifts & weekend working. Extreme early starts and late finishing times involved.
As an inclusive employer, we want you to bring your “whole self” skills and dedication to ScotRail and we’ll recognise your effort, support your development, and help to drive your ambition. We offer an attractive reference salary of £30,543 per annum on completion of training & 3% commission on ticket sales. During training, the trainee salary is £21,193 per annum.
We’ll ensure you’re rewarded for your contribution with a competitive package that includes:
- Contributory Final Salary Pension scheme
- Free and reduced rate rail travel for you and your family, where applicable.
- Generous holiday allowance
- Hapi benefits package, offered to everyone at ScotRail
Your training, which will take place in Glasgow, will include induction, customer service, commercial skills, first aid, fire safety, disability awareness and conflict management - will be professionally delivered to give you all the tools to need to master this surprisingly varied and interesting job.
Selection process: Selected candidates will be short-listed and invited to complete on-line assessments. If, successful, the next stage would be an interview with a local manager. The final stage for successful candidates will be a medical questionnaire. Appointees must submit at least two satisfactory references, Disclosure Scotland clearance and complete a six-month probation period.
