We are currently looking for a Logistics Specialist - Inbound Planning based out of St. Thomas, ON
Our mission has started. Volkswagen Group's largest cell factory in St. Thomas will carry out all battery activities - from processing raw materials to developing a unified Volkswagen battery to managing the European and North American gigafactories. We are looking for a Logistics Specialist - Inbound Planning to plan, implement, and optimize inbound logistics and transportation processes for the PowerCo SE facility in St. Thomas. Reporting temporarily to the CFO, you will support and contribute to the PowerCo SE logistics team to achieve the objectives of the logistics rollout project at the Canadian facility.
This is a temporary flex hybrid model requiring 2 days in the St. Thomas office, subject to change based on the needs and nature of this project. During certain phases of the build, a more frequent onsite presence will be a requirement.
Primary Responsibilities
- Develop a robust, resilient, and cost-effective transportation network for PowerCo SE in North America (road, rail, intermodal, parcel, sea, and air)
- Plan road and rail infrastructure from a logistics perspective for the site, and for the connections to public/3rd party infrastructure (road and rail)
- Suggest, define and implement local adaptations to inbound logistics processes and requirements for the St. Thomas gigafactory, based on standards and concepts provided by PowerCo SE in Germany, continually improving for increased efficiency and ensuring scalability
- Source and technically evaluate potential transport providers (e.g., carriers, short line railroads, 3PLs, 4PLs)
- Attend conferences, trade shows, and events to build relationships with suppliers and maintain knowledge of emerging industry trends
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with services providers/carriers, ensuring continued success by creating and monitoring performance indicators
- Prepare RFPs/RFQs for logistics services such as transportation, handling, or warehousing
- Perform technical evaluation and negotiation of offers during the tendering process, and conduct contract evaluations to ensure adherence to terms and conditions
- Prepare and present regular reports including forecasts of future transport demands and performance reports, to share with logistics partners
- Manage transport demands and capacities (long term), and resolve shortages of transport capacities (short term)
- Plan and define local adaptations to the truck control centre and related processes, based on standards and concepts provided by PowerCo SE headquarters
- Define requirements for a freight auditing process
- Calculate inbound logistics costs for production material
- Align transportation and packaging concepts with customers, and coordinate packaging planning for inbound production material with packaging planning team
- Define requirements for IT solutions supporting the inbound logistics processes
- Prepare presentations and applications, e.g., for cash management/investment committees, or board meetings
- Collaborate closely with other departments within the St. Thomas facility, Volkswagen Group Canada, and PowerCo SE headquarters
- Miscellaneous logistics rollout-related tasks as required
- Bachelor's degree Post-Secondary Education in Logistics, Supply Chain, or equivalent, relevant work experience
- 5+ years in a related logistics planning function, ideally within a large, global organization
- In-depth, proven experience in logistics and transport planning or transport management, experience in packaging planning would be considered an asset
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in an environment of shifting priorities, timelines, and occasional ambiguity
- A global mindset, with a customer driven approach and ability to build trust and relationships
- Experience in battery or battery cell logistics or handling hazardous goods would be considered an asset
- Ability to travel both within Canada and internationally up to ~ 20%
- German language skills are considered an asset
