The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly is one of the three distinct and autonomous branches of the Government of the Northwest Territories (Legislative, Executive and Judicial). As such, it operates with autonomy and independence from Cabinet direction and the public service at large. This independence is critical to the mandate of the Legislative Assembly to scrutinize and approve legislation and budgets proposed by cabinet, monitor and critique the activities and performance of the executive branch and provide a forum for the exercise of responsible parliamentary democracy in the Northwest Territories.
Job Information
Are you passionate about public policy, legislative processes, and making a tangible impact through independent research? The Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories is seeking a skilled and apolitical Research Analyst to support its Members in their work representing constituents, passing laws, and holding the government to account.
As a Research Analyst, you will conduct in depth, independent research and provide data driven analysis to support the decisions and initiatives of Members of the Legislative Assembly. Your work will directly inform legislative debates, committee reviews, and strategic decision making processes that shape the future of the Northwest Territories.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work one-on-one with Members to clarify and respond to complex research requests.
- Prepare briefing notes, background papers, speaking points, and draft questions/statements in alignment with parliamentary rules.
- Evaluate government legislation, policy, fiscal initiatives, and strategic plans.
- Analyze departmental business plans, appropriations, and cross-jurisdictional data to ensure Members are well-informed.
- Assist in preparing Committee reports and evaluating materials before Standing Committees.
- Lead or contribute to corporate projects, including strategic planning and operational development.
Key Qualifications:
- A degree in a relevant discipline such as Public Administration or Political Science and two (2) years of experience in a policy or research role.
Equivalencies include:
- A Degree in Journalism, Business Administration, or Economics and two (2) years of experience in a policy or research role.

A Diploma in Public Administration, Political Science, Journalism, Business Administration, or Economics and 8 years of experience in a policy or research role.
