About the role

Are you fascinated by the future of transport and how self-driving cars will interact with pedestrians? Do you love diving into data, coding in virtual environments, and making real-world impact?

The Urban Systems Lab (USL) at Imperial College London is on the lookout for a Research Associate to join the PedICAV (Pedestrian Interactions with Connected and Autonomous Vehicles) project—a research study funded by the Road Safety Trust (RST). This 30-month fixed-term position is all about shaping the future of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) to ensure they work safely and inclusively for everyone—especially vulnerable pedestrians.

So, if you’re ready to code, analyse, research, and innovate, we’d love to hear from you! and help us create a safer, smarter transport future.

What you would be doing

  • Investigating how pedestrians interact with self-driving cars
  • Analysing data, crunching stats, and designing surveys
  • Using virtual reality (VR) and coding to simulate real-world scenarios
  • Producing research to inform government policies, infrastructure and vehicle design
  • Publishing academic papers and contributing to global conversations in road safety

What we are looking for

  • A PhD in transportation engineering/studies or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
  • Experience in econometrics software and coding languages (e.g.R, MATLAB, SPSS)
  • A creative approach to problem-solving
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to work with both quantitative & qualitative research simultaneously
  • Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines, and flexible attitude to work

What we can offer you

  • Opportunity to collaborate with experts in academia, government and industry
  • Scope to work on cutting-edge research that directly impacts the future of mobility
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
