NOTE: This posting represents a part-time (20 hours), permanent seasonal employment from September 2, 2025, to April 30, 2026.
Schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm and Saturdays 10:30 am to 6:00pm.
SCOPE
Reporting to the Department Administrator, Studio Arts (direct supervision) the incumbent supports curriculum delivery by ensuring students can access the tools and assistance needed for coursework and projects while fostering skill development through providing information and guidance on the use of cameras, lighting, editing software, and other technologies. The incumbent ensures a safe, efficient, and productive learning environment by maintaining and organizing studios, equipment, and consumables. Additionally, the incumbent contributes to innovation and creativity by supporting the exploration of new techniques and technologies while upholding safety standards to protect users and prevent accidents.
- Regularly inspect and calibrate photography equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity for both digital and traditional photography operations.
- Oversee the operation and upkeep of photography studios, darkrooms, digital labs, and related facilities, ensuring they remain functional, safe, and up to date.
- Develop and refine workflows for facility operations, organize, and inventory photographic equipment, ensuring it is in proper working order. Schedule and manage the checkout system (WCO) for cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and other tools.
- Provide students, faculty, and staff with information in the proper use of cameras, software, and other photography equipment. Troubleshoot technical issues with equipment or software and provide timely solutions. Assist with photo editing and processing software such as Adobe Photoshop.
- Stay current with WHMIS training for complying with Canadian occupational health and safety regulations, minimizing workplace incidents involving hazardous materials, and promoting a culture of safety and awareness among staff and students.
- Ensure that all studio spaces and equipment usage comply with health and safety regulations. Conduct regular inspections of studio setups to identify potential hazards. Give information sessions to users on safety protocols, including handling chemicals for analog photography.
- Perform regular cleaning, and minor repairs on photographic equipment and studio facilities. Monitor consumable supplies (e.g., paper, chemicals, batteries) and manage inventory to ensure availability.
- Collaborate with faculty to prepare technical resources for classes and workshops. Provide on-site support during photography demonstrations, critiques, and special projects.
- Actively seek user feedback to identify areas for improvement and implement changes that enhance the quality of services offered.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma of Collegial Studies (3 yr) in Photography, Visual Arts, or a related field and minimum of two to three years of professional experience in photography, technical support, or in a relevant field or bachelor's degree in fine arts, Photography, with an emphasis on technical photography skills and digital media. Experience working in a higher education environment an asset.
- Experience in an academic or creative environment. Extensive knowledge of Fine Arts Photography and a strong passion for the intersection of Arts and Technology an asset.
- Certification or training for both digital and traditional photography operations and techniques, equipment maintenance, or related software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) is considered an asset.
- Expertise with Web Checkout resource management software an asset.
- Working Knowledge of health and safety standards in studio environments, including WHMIS certification.
- Will require use of respiratory protection and enrollment in the University’s Respiratory Protection Program.
- Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities (for example, occasionally lifting/carrying/moving with assistance items weighing > 45 kg (100 lbs) and frequently lifting/carrying/moving without assistance items weighing < 23kg (50 lbs)) attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University’s satisfaction.
