Overview

The Ktunaxa Nation Council is seeking to hire several Ktunaxa Language Transcribers. The Traditional Knowledge and Language sector received a "Listen, Hear Our Voices" grant from Library and Archives Canada in order to transcribe and translate part of a collection of Ktunaxa language archival recordings from 1968-1982. Reporting to the Director of TKL, the opportunity is suited for someone who has experience and skill listening to Ktunaxa and typing in the language.
This is a contractor position with flexible hours that can be done remotely or in-person at the KNC offices.

How to apply
:
Please email a statement of interest and resume to [email protected]
If you have an example of your previous language work, please include it with your email.
Applications will be continuously reviewed until the work is complete.

We thank all applicants for their interest. However, only those selected for interviews will be contacted.

Responsibilities

Ktunaxa Language Transcribers will listen to the recordings, using transcription software (ELAN or Praat) to write down all the Ktunaxa text from each one, and provide a general description of topics discussed in the file, and/or detailed English translations as they are able. The transcriber team will all support each other in this project, with team members who are more technically proficient helping those who are more proficient in language, and vice versa.
Transcribers will follow a work flow that includes…
Accessing an audio file on a shared location (OneDrive)
Downloading and listening to the file
Writing the Ktunaxa words and English meanings from the audio file
Using transcribing software like ELAN or Praat to line up the audio file with the transcript
    Sharing progress at regular meetings
Cross-checking your work with other learner-transcribers (particularly if this is your first time transcribing Ktunaxa)
Translating your transcriptions in a mixed team of learners and fluent speakers
Working alongside fluent speakers to refine translations and transcriptions

After transcripts and translations are complete, they will be vetted and corrected by the Traditional Knowledge and Language Advisory Committee. Finally, once Ktunaxa transcriptions and English translations have been approved and saved on Ktunaxa Nation servers, these trios of recording + transcription + translation will be made available to community members.

Qualifications

At least 75 hours of Ktunaxa language learning, including both spoken and written Ktunaxa; experience typing on a Ktunaxa language keyboard particularly relevant
Computer skills, particularly typing and learning new tools (experience with transcription and file sharing solutions like Google Drive or OneDrive particularly relevant)
Strong communication skills and ability to communicate in a variety of settings and mediums
