Mō te tūnga | About the role
We are looking for a Support Worker to work one-to-one with a tāngata whaikaha, helping them to achieve their goals and participate in the activities that they enjoy. No one is too disabled or "challenging" to be supported in taking an active role in their life. Dealing with challenging situations can be tough, but with the right approach, we can make a significant difference, promote positive behaviours, and create a supportive environment for people to thrive.
You will be supporting a wahine with complex behavioural support needs. Part of what you do each day will be helping them to recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm and respond safely to this. We are looking for someone active who has the resilience and confidence to work in a challenging and highly rewarding environment.
Your role involves helping the tāngata whaikaha:
- recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm.
- grow their independence and learn skills for daily living.
- manage their daily routines - shower, get dressed, take medication or eat a meal.
- pursue their goals, interests, and hobbies.
- stay healthy and making positive choices about their lifestyle.
- have strong connections with their whānau and community.
Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring
We would prefer someone who has previous experience working within the disability sector or with at risk youth, but more importantly, we are looking for someone with some life experience and the right attitude. It is essential that you have the skills to build good relationships with people.
- Patience, a calm nature and confidence to work in challenging situations.
- Previous experience working in challenging situations.
- An understanding of Māori culture and values is desirable
- Preferably previous experience in caregiving or providing personal care for adults.
- Flexibility to work rostered shifts including days, evenings, sleepovers, and weekends.
- Comfortable and proficient in using computers and tablets daily.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Physical fitness and ability to undertake outdoor activities including walking, swimming and using public transport.
- A Full NZ driver's license.
Nōu te rourou | What's in it for you?
- $23.84 - $29.10 per hour depending on relevant qualifications, with the ability to earn more as you gain qualifications.
- IDEA Services will support you towards completion of the Level 2, 3 and 4 Certificates in Health and Wellbeing qualifications.
- Generous long service leave entitlements plus insurance benefits after 2 years' service.
